They currently sit with a little over 1.4 million complaints filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (or CFPB) and over 1,100 with the Better Business Bureau. Many complaints are about inaccurate reporting and/or lack of response to debt verification requests.
Out of these complaints, one consumer wrote to the CFPB and complained, "I received a call today XX/XX/2020 at XXXX XXXX PST from Midland Credit Management ( XXXX ) XXXX on my personal cell phone asking for my wife. I said this is her husband and the debt collector started divulging information from a debt that she previously owed to a different entity without proper verification of who I was or obtaining consent from the owner of the debt to discuss this information with me." This consumer is correct that they do not have the right to divulge certain information, although they do not mention what information was divulged. They continue, "When I asked to speak to a supervisor to explain that they were in violation of FDCPA he assured me that they were not. I explained to him that I am fully aware of the law as I have worked for consumer collections for over 20 years and he proceeded to dismiss it to be true and continued to ask me to resolve the debt. Since the company is in violation of the FDCPA I would like a full investigation and proceed with the fullest of penalties that are applicable to this agency and the original owner of the debt since they are responsible for vetting the collection agency that represents them." While they may be in violation, depending on what was asked, complaining to the CFPB will not get the account removed from his wife's credit. And as far as an FDCPA violation, they should have spoke to an attorney, quick!
This means working with a professional like Credit Glory to challenge your negative accounts has a good chance to get them deleted, improving your score and allowing you to qualify for the home, car, and credit cards you need.
